Higher Derivative Corrections, Dimensional Reduction and Ehlers Duality

    Get PDF
Motivated by applications to black hole physics and duality, we study the effect of higher derivative corrections on the dimensional reduction of four-dimensional Einstein, Einstein Liouville and Einstein-Maxwell gravity to one direction, as appropriate for stationary, spherically symmetric solutions. We construct a field redefinition scheme such that the one-dimensional Lagrangian is corrected only by powers of first derivatives of the fields, eliminating spurious modes and providing a suitable starting point for quantization. We show that the Ehlers symmetry, broken by the leading R2R^2 corrections in Einstein-Liouville gravity, can be restored by including contributions of Taub-NUT instantons. Finally, we give a preliminary discussion of the duality between higher-derivative F-term corrections on the vector and hypermultiplet branches in N=2 supergravity in four dimensions.Comment: 21 pages, uses JHEP3.cls; v3: minor corrections, final version published in JHE

Two Centered Black Holes and N=4 Dyon Spectrum

    Get PDF
The exact spectrum of dyons in a class of N=4 supersymmetric string theories is known to change discontinuously across walls of marginal stability. We show that the change in the degeneracy across the walls of marginal stability can be accounted for precisely by the entropy of two centered small black holes which disappear as we cross the walls of marginal stability.Comment: LaTeX file, 12 pages; v3: added footnote 2 regarding overall sign of the index, expanded footnote 3, added reference

Black Holes, Elementary Strings and Holomorphic Anomaly

In a previous paper we had proposed a specific route to relating the entropy of two charge black holes to the degeneracy of elementary string states in N=4 supersymmetric heterotic string theory in four dimensions. For toroidal compactification this proposal works correctly to all orders in a power series expansion in inverse charges provided we take into account the corrections to the black hole entropy formula due to holomorphic anomaly. In this paper we demonstrate that similar agreement holds also for other N=4 supersymmetric heterotic string compactifications.Comment: LaTeX file, 28 pages, reference added, minor changes in appendix

Synthesis and characterization of selected fused isoxazole and pyrazole derivatives and their antimicrobial activity

New potent antibacterials, fused isoxazole and pyrazole derivatives, were synthesized using 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione (1) and 3-[(4-chlorobenzylidene)amino]-2-thioxoimidazolidin-4-one (2) as synthons. Aromatic aldehydes on condensation with 1 and 2 gave 2-arylidene-5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione (3) and 5-arylidene-3-[(4-chlorobenzylidene)amino]-2-thioxoimidazolidin-4-one (4), respectively. Compounds 3 and 4 were forced to undergo heterocyclization reaction with nucleophilic reagents to give the title compounds. The newly synthesized heterocyles (5–8) were characterized based on their chemical properties and spectroscopic data, and were found to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium diphtheriae

AbstractA series of 2H,4H-2-[3,5-dimethyl-4-(substituted) phenyl azo pyrazol-1-yl] carbonyl methyl-3-oxo-1,4-benzothiazine derivatives have been synthesized by the reaction of 2H,4H-2-hydrazino carbonyl methyl-3-oxo-1,4-benzothiazine with acetyl acetone derivatives using ultrasound in lesser time with higher yields. All the synthesized compounds were investigated for their antibacterial activities. The result indicated that the compounds show convincing activities against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus lactis) when compared with standard drug (ampicillin trihydrate). These compounds were also synthesized by conventional method and their structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral analyses and chemical reactions

Asymptotic degeneracy of dyonic N=4 string states and black hole entropy

It is shown that the asymptotic growth of the microscopic degeneracy of BPS dyons in four-dimensional N=4 string theory captures the known corrections to the macroscopic entropy of four-dimensional extremal black holes. These corrections are subleading in the limit of large charges and originate both from the presence of interactions in the effective action quadratic in the Riemann tensor and from non-holomorphic terms. The presence of the non-holomorphic corrections and their contribution to the thermodynamic free energy is discussed. It is pointed out that the expression for the microscopic entropy, written as a function of the dilaton field, is stationary at the horizon by virtue of the attractor equations.Comment: 16 pages Late

Generalized Kac-Moody Algebras from CHL dyons

We provide evidence for the existence of a family of generalized Kac-Moody(GKM) superalgebras, G_N, whose Weyl-Kac-Borcherds denominator formula gives rise to a genus-two modular form at level N, Delta_{k/2}(Z), for (N,k)=(1,10), (2,6), (3,4), and possibly (5,2). The square of the automorphic form is the modular transform of the generating function of the degeneracy of CHL dyons in asymmetric Z_N-orbifolds of the heterotic string compactified on T^6. The new generalized Kac-Moody superalgebras all arise as different `automorphic corrections' of the same Lie algebra and are closely related to a generalized Kac-Moody superalgebra constructed by Gritsenko and Nikulin. The automorphic forms, Delta_{k/2}(Z), arise as additive lifts of Jacobi forms of (integral) weight k/2 and index 1/2. We note that the orbifolding acts on the imaginary simple roots of the unorbifolded GKM superalgebra, G_1 leaving the real simple roots untouched. We anticipate that these superalgebras will play a role in understanding the `algebra of BPS states' in CHL compactifications.Comment: LaTeX, 35 pages; v2: improved referencing and discussion; typos corrected; v3 [substantial revision] 44 pages, modularity of additive lift proved, product representation of the forms also given; further references adde

Global Aspects of T-Duality, Gauged Sigma Models and T-Folds

    Get PDF
The gauged sigma-model argument that string backgrounds related by T-dual give equivalent quantum theories is revisited, taking careful account of global considerations. The topological obstructions to gauging sigma-models give rise to obstructions to T-duality, but these are milder than those for gauging: it is possible to T-dualise a large class of sigma-models that cannot be gauged. For backgrounds that are torus fibrations, it is expected that T-duality can be applied fibrewise in the general case in which there are no globally-defined Killing vector fields, so that there is no isometry symmetry that can be gauged; the derivation of T-duality is extended to this case. The T-duality transformations are presented in terms of globally-defined quantities. The generalisation to non-geometric string backgrounds is discussed, the conditions for the T-dual background to be geometric found and the topology of T-folds analysed.Comment: Minor corrections and addition

Thermodynamic Geometric Stability of Quarkonia states

We compute exact thermodynamic geometric properties of the non-abelian quarkonium bound states from the consideration of one-loop strong coupling. From the general statistical principle, the intrinsic geometric nature of strongly coupled QCD is analyzed for the Columbic, rising and Regge rotating regimes. Without any approximation, we have obtained the non-linear mass effect for the Bloch-Nordsieck rotating strongly coupled quarkonia. For a range of physical parameters, we show in each cases that there exists a well-defined, non-degenerate, curved, intrinsic Riemannian manifold. As the gluons become softer and softer, we find in the limit of the Bloch-Nordsieck resummation that the strong coupling obtained from the Sudhakov form factor possesses exact local and global thermodynamic properties of the underlying mesons, kaons and DsD_s particles.Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures, Keywords: Thermodynamic Geometry, Quarkonia, Massive Quarks, QCD Form Factor. Negative discriminant states in N=4 supersymmetric string theories

Single centered BPS black hole solutions exist only when the charge carried by the black hole has positive discriminant. On the other hand the exact dyon spectrum in heterotic string theory compactified on T^6 is known to contain states with negative discriminant. We show that all of these negative discriminant states can be accounted for as two centered black holes. Thus after the contribution to the index from the two centered black holes is subtracted from the total microscopic index, the index for states with negative discriminant vanishes even for finite values of charges, in agreement with the results from the black hole side. Bound state metamorphosis -- which requires us to identify certain apparently different two centered configurations according to a specific set of rules -- plays a crucial role in this analysis. We also generalize these results to a class of CHL string theories.Comment: LaTeX file, 32 pages; v2: reference added; v3: added new section 3.
